Going Green Fattens Your Wallet

Climate Prosperity Handbook

Your go-to guide listing the economic benefits of going Green.

Florida Power and Light

Florida Power and Light provides FREE energy audits for residents and businesses as well as energy - and cost saving - tips!

Green Roof Grant

The DDA has established its first ever Green Roof Grant to help Downtown property owners lengthen the life of their roof and conserve energy.

VistaBrightLighting

VistaBrightLighting, a national supplier of energy efficient lighting products, has announced a new nationwide grant program to provide qualifying nonprofit organizations with cash allowances and services for the purpose of installing new energy efficient lighting systems. The grant program is made possible through the ongoing efforts of VistaBright in organizing the nationwide Energy ALERT (Advanced Lighting Equipment Replacement Technology) Alliance comprised of lighting industry manufacturers, distributors, and electrical contractors.

The grant program is designed to assist educational institutions (private and public), churches, charitable organizations, community groups, and all other qualifying nonprofit organizations in reducing the costs of buying and installing state-of-the-art light fixtures in their facilities. Use of this "green technology" is expected to result in a significant reduction in monthly energy costs.

The Future of Gardening in Palm Beach County - Allen Sistrunk, Director, Mounts Botanical Garden, in the Clematis Room - 3rd Floor, WPB Public Library on March 25th, 2010, Thursday at 3:00 PM.

Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate

Florida’s ENERGY STAR appliance rebate program will focus on replacing products in the Florida home that provide the state with the most energy and water savings and that are not already covered by a state or large utility program. Florida will offer a 20 percent rebate off the retail price of a new qualified ENERGY STAR appliance. Rebates shall be available only for the following ENERGY STAR certified appliances and products: gas tank-less water heaters, clothes washers, refrigerators, dishwashers, room air-conditioners and freezers. This program is available to all Florida residents through a mail-in rebate application and will launch April 16, 2010, and conclude April 25, 2010. It is timed to coincide with Florida’s Earth Day Activities.   In additional to the rebate for purchasing the ENERGY STAR appliance, consumers will also receive an additional $75 if they provide evidence of having recycled the old appliance.

FREE Recycling Is Available!

SWA Recycling Opportunities

This program is for office paper and corrugated cardboard only and does not include any glass, plastic or aluminum. If you are interested in recycling these items, please contact SWA at (561) 547-4000 for more information.

Waste Management

Waste Management  contracts  with  the City of West Palm Beach  to collect the residential recycling . For business recycling  they charge businesses $25 a month for a 95 gallon cart  to be picked up once a week. They recycle all material including paper glass, cardboard, plastic and aluminum. They may be contacted at (951) 974-7500.

Valet-Style Services

The other option for businesses in the downtown area is to contract with a "valet-style" service. There could be a charge for this service, however they could collect and recycle paper as well as additional materials for you. A list of potential companies are listed below:

  • Saxon Archives Mobile Shredding (561) 792-2006
  • Shred Assured (561) 753-4414
  • Quik Shred (561) 427-0088

Tips to Save Money and Help the Environment!

* Turn lights out at night! This will save on your electric cost.

* Use both sides of the paper and use scrap paper for note taking.

* Save money on gas! Carpool to work, if you need help finding someone to carpool with, please visit the City's Transportation Management Website and they will connect you with people in your area to carpool with.

* Spread the word! Educate your fellow coworkers and friends about the benefits and the need to recycle.
